In Memoriam: Sylvan Tackitt, LLB'33
For the majority of his astounding 75-year legal career, Sylvan W. Tackitt could be found in a small office in downtown Bloomington, poring over cases next to the Monroe County Courthouse.
Even at the age of 99, Tackitt would regularly put in time in the office, doing what he loved most. His death on July 17 brought to close one of the longest legal careers in U.S. history.
Tackitt, LLB'33, was a fixture of the Indiana legal community, earning such prestigious awards as the Sagamore of the Wabash and the Golden Barrister Award, which was presented to him this past April.
Indiana Law Shatters Fundraising Goals
The Indiana University School of Law—Bloomington has set new records in fundraising. Both its capital campaign (Matching the Promise) and its annual fund (Fund for Excellence) have surpassed their targets and, with tremendous support from alumni and friends, are still growing.
Indiana Law has raised $47 million for Matching the Promise, including its largest-ever corporate gift of $25 million from the Lilly Endowment and multi-million-dollar gifts from individual alumni. Indiana University will match interest income on all qualifying Indiana Law scholarship endowments, and those endowments will exist in perpetuity. A 1:1 match is available for gifts of at least $250,000, and a 1:2 match is available for gifts between $150,000 and $249,999.
Faculty Connect at Annual Law and Society Conference
Indiana Law faculty was well represented at the 2008 Joint Annual Meetings of Law and Society Association and Canadian Law and Society Association, recently held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Several presented or served as chair or discussants at the meeting, including Professor Jeannine Bell, Charles Whistler Faculty Fellow. "Law and Society is a great way for me to talk about my work," explained Bell, who has been heavily involved in Law and Society for the past 14 years.
